Continuing a success story with one of our repeat-business customers, SMD will be undertaking Phase 2 of the extension to Wimbledon High School, just outside of London.
The project represents yet another contribution to the improvement of our school system in the UK and will be the fourth contract with our client in recent years and unbelievably our 450th contract on a school or Academy since 2000.
In August 2020 the government announced the allocation of funding for 580 building projects at academies, sixth form colleges and voluntary aided schools in England to transform facilities and improve school buildings.
The funding was set in place to allow schools and academies to repair and upgrade school facilities to create modern, fit-for-purpose spaces that meet schools’ needs. It also allows for a small number of expansion projects to increase school capacity.
The funding comes from the £560 million allocated by the Prime Minister last year to help the nation bounce back from the pandemic, investing in schools to help teachers deliver a world-class education and create jobs.
The government has also brought forward £200 million for FE colleges, as part of pa plan to invest £1.5 billion over five years to transform the FE college estate… so many more contracts like this will no doubt continue to flow through our books!
The contract is being undertaken by the Small Works Team, lead by Keith Grange and consists of 700m² of TR60+ and 2600 shear studs along with the concrete topping.
The work includes:
- Expanding and redeveloping the science block to create a STEAM Tower, building above an existing structure.
- A new Sixth Form Centre that offers an inspiring, sophisticated, and appropriate space that bridges school and university life.
