As the construction industry works towards net zero, reducing embodied carbon in structural materials is becoming a key design priority. This CPD explores Firth Steels and the SMD product range Steel Reborn® initiative covering the drive to lower the carbon in our structural products. It will highlight how our own manufacturing processes and steel sourcing decisions, through partnership with SSAB Swedish Steel, can significantly reduce a project's carbon footprint.
The presentation explains how Steel Reborn® options of the SMD product range are manufactured using electric arc furnace (EAF) technology and recycled steel feedstock, delivering the same structural performance BUT with a much lower embodied carbon impact. The Steel Reborn® range boasts embodied carbon savings of approximately 70% CO₂e compared with traditional blast furnace steel production.
• The principles behind the Steel Reborn® programme and its role in reducing carbon emissions within Firth Steels processes, supply chain, and the structural steel products on the market.
• The latest R733 low embodied carbon decking products manufactured using SSAB Zero™ EAF steel produced from recycled materials and renewable energy sources.
• The contribution low carbon steel can make towards project sustainability targets and whole-life carbon assessments – including a review of useful carbon calculator tools made available for the SMD product range.
