SITE PREPARATION FOR METAL DECK INSTALLATION

With over 35 years of industry expertise, SMD continues to lead the UK market in the design, manufacture, and installation of structural metal decking systems. Our commitment to safety, efficiency, and collaboration means every contract is delivered to the highest standard—on time and within budget.

To help our clients achieve a smooth and cost-effective build, we've created a comprehensive guide outlining how to prepare for and support SMD's site installation process. From logistics planning to on-site coordination, understanding these key steps will minimise delays, prevent trade clashes, and enhance overall safety.

Before SMD Arrives: Planning is Key

Successful installation begins before we arrive. Clients must ensure that materials can be safely delivered, lifted to level, and positioned according to SMD drawings. Proper material placement reduces manual handling risks and improves workflow efficiency.

  • Deliveries typically arrive via articulated flatbed lorries. Flexible vehicle options are available based on site access.
  • Packs of decking must be placed in the correct positions to align with installation drawings—incorrect placement may result in delays.
  • Shear studs, if required, must be mechanically lifted to level—manual handling is not permitted due to health and safety risks.

Site Preparedness: Safety First

Several key safety measures must be in place before SMD begins work:

  • Edge protection systems must be pre-installed, meeting all relevant safety standards.
  • Access to work levels should ideally be via staircases or hoists—ladder access is discouraged.
  • Steelwork must be cleaned of paint or grease where studs will be welded.
  • Ground conditions should be flat, firm, and clear of obstructions.
  • Exclusion zones must be enforced beneath decking and welding operations—other trades are not permitted in these areas until SMD works are complete.
  • A site handover sheet must also be completed to confirm the readiness of the work area.

SMD On Site: What to Expect

Once on site, our installation team will undergo full site inductions and permit processes. We'll provide all necessary certification and ensure safe access is available for netting installation, often requiring MEWPs and ample working space.

Waste management is another crucial consideration. Off-cuts and debris must be removed safely, with skip or pallet-based systems in place—manual waste removal down staircases is not allowed.

When studs will be welded, our install team will thin-six metres of the steel frame for safe earthing. The area below must be clear of personnel and flammable materials.
