SMD is one of the UK’s top names in metal decking, but what is less well known is that we pour more than 100,000 square metres of concrete every year.
With that figure equating to the size of 400 tennis courts, it’s no wonder that we have a contract team dedicated solely to concrete projects operating from our Tower Park, Poole headquarters.
The Team
The four strong team is sales manager Scott King (above Left), estimator Rosie Sharp, quantity surveyor Max Amey (above right) and co-ordinator Will Corsie (above centre).
They are augmented by the on-site group of concrete site supervisor Matt Willan Ryan Shilton and Muhammed Karami.
Scott said: “We offer a comprehensive service – a complete one-stop shop for clients to deliver our renowned single source solution on projects and we liaise very closely with our steel decking colleagues.
“The vast majority of our decking contracts require a concrete finish so it makes absolute sense for the same company to be involved in all aspects of a project.”
A single point responsibility
Scott, who joined us last year, added: “Our in-house management structure enables the seamless integration of the concrete works into the overall decking sequence.
“We feel this achieves single point responsibility, increased programme certainty, less administration, reduced co-ordination between work packages and the knowledge that our specialist concreting teams completely understand decking.”
We formed our stand-alone Concrete Department in 2010 and it has now completed more than 150 concrete contracts, including 59 last year alone.
The grey wet stuff
One of our largest concrete contract is the ARM Building, Cambridge, for Kier Construction where concrete was poured on 15,428m² of R51 decking in a project completed in 2017.
TGN, industry guidance and best practice sheets
We also produce ‘best practice’ guidance sheets for potential clients.
Scott added: “These sheets are for the installation of concrete on composite metal decking floor slabs and provide insight and knowledge of undertaking concrete to metal deck.
“The ethos behind this is our continued commitment to drive industry standards higher and be the ‘go to’ place for a whole range of technical knowledge.”
TGN Online – Concrete
A large section has been recently added to the TGN specifically relating to decking on metal floor deck, see section 12 for this information.
