9.5 Lifting Shear Studs to Level

Shear stud barrels must be lifted to the appropriate level by crane to the to reduce the need for manual handling. All lifting equipment must be regularly inspected in line with the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998.

SMD do not employ Slinger Banksmen.

The lifting of shear studs is the responsibility of the client.

Lifting stud barrels

  • Positive Points - Shear studs must be lifted to level by mechanical means (by the client). Stud barrels can be lifted using a bespoke, tested & certificated barrel lift. Barrel lifts are available in single and double formats. This requires suitable planning, plant & access.

Moving stud barrels on pallets

  • Positive Points - Stud barrels can be lifted on pallets using proprietary pallet lifting forks and safety net. This requires suitable planning, plant & access. Similarly site forklift can move pallets of studs provided suitable plant & loading bay is available.

Moving studs by hand

  • Bad Points - Carrying studs up stairs in quantities greater than 100 is not recommended due to risks from manual handling. This method is very time consuming and adds duration to SMD works.

  • Bad Points - Carrying studs up ladders adds the hazard of a fall from height which is unacceptable.
