Consideration must be given to ensure off-cuts of decking and edge trims, metal banding, timber, cardboard boxes, failed shear studs etc. can be safely removed from the building.

The lifting down of scrap is the responsibility of the client.

Waste materials in skips

Suitable certificated lifting skips or skips with lifting cradles provide the safest means of clearing waste from each level. Provision must be made for plant to lift these skips to and from the working level. Roll over skips provide an acceptable alternative.

Waste materials on pallets

Loading & securing waste onto a pallet for removal by forklift truck is a good solution provided a loading bay & suitable plant is available. This is often adopted even if the removal is not undertaken when SMD are on site but is actioned later in build when plant & access are available.

Removal of waste by hand is not acceptable

Carrying scrap down stairs in individual pieces increases the risks of cuts to hand, arms, legs & face, increases risks from manual handling. Very time consuming & adds duration to SMD works. Carrying scrap down ladders adds the hazard of a fall from height & is unacceptable.

SMD will NOT undertake this operation

Removal of waste by throwing is not acceptable

Uncontrolled “Bombing” either onto the ground or directly into a skip is unacceptable. Risk of injury to other trades & or public.

SMD will NOT undertake this operation

Hazardous waste

Hazardous waste must be disposed of on site in appropriate skips or returned to SMD for disposal.

Hazardous waste generated by SMD activities include:

• Expanded Filler Foam Cans

• Expanded Filler Foam Cleaner Cans

Used cartridge strips are not classified as hazardous provided any live shots are removed.
