SMD London Contracts Location Challenge

Below lists the contracts included in this challenge along with some insightful facts and clues of where they are located – some are more obvious than others but can you locate where you are on the map?

1 SMD Contract 5737 – The Shard

This job has been SMD’s UK flagship contract since we started working on site in 2009! Located south of the river, The Shard is the tallest building in Eastern Europe and an icon of the London Skyline. We designed, manufactured and installed over 130,000m2 of floor deck all the way up to Level 72 on the observation floors! Our site lads needed nerves of steel to work on this contract!

2 SMD Contract 7365 – The Scalpel

One of the most modern looking buildings in London, this city-centre building is designed similar to The Shard with a pointed apex – the cranes were built into the structure of the building to ensure access to all levels were maintained.

3 SMD Contract 5251 – 8-13 Lime Street

Located on a cobbled street in the epi-centre of London, this contract was built on a challenging site with a small footprint and limited access. Because the job was located in central London, this was one of our first ‘pre-cut’ jobs we worked on where all the deck sheets were cut at angles off site ready for installation with reduced noise on site.

4 SMD Contract 5957 – Park House

The building is now inhabited by Swarovski Jewellers, Zara and a host of office space on the upper floors. You’ll no doubt have visited this building when on a shopping trip to London as it’s on one of the main streets where all the high-end retailers are located.

5 SMD Contract 5334 – Cannon Street

The original site is situated on the site of a medieval steelyard producing war cannons, hence the name. Below the building is the Cannon Street mainline railway terminus which connects directly to the London Underground station. The building enjoys attraction from tourists visiting the city as it was featured in the 2013 action film, The Fast and Furious. We installed close to 50,000sm of R51 floor deck to this building.

6 SMD Contract 7436 – Building 24, Warner Bros Studios

A tedious link from one film set to another, located in north west London, in 2016 SMD installed approximately 2,000sm of TR60+ floor deck – Located opposite L stage, Building 24 includes Workshops 14 to 21, and includes costume space with dye room, and other spaces ideal for construction, props store, costume store or SFX workshops.

7 SMD Contract 7183 – 48 Leicester Square

This listed building retained the whole of the façade during construction with practically the entire internal structure being removed before it was reconstructed with a steel frame and 12,000sm of R51+ floor deck.

8 SMD Contract 5183 – Regents Place

Located a stone-throw from Regents Park, this building inhabits a number of eateries, office space and even a climbing wall! Constructed in 2016, this large scale development is donut shaped with 9 floors surrounding a courtyard area.
